SCHS Track and Field History

The following information was found in Shawano Annuals, Track and Field information kept on file at Shawano High School, and the archives of the Shawano Leader on micro film at the city library.  We realize there may be mistakes, omissions, and inaccurate information.  We are asking for your help, if you can add any information, names, etc., it would be greatly appreciated.  Just contact Joel Wondra (jwondra@shawanoschools.org) at the high school, or head coach Joe Guenther at jeguenther@shawanoschools.org.  We would especially like to add to the pre-1930 era.

An interesting story concerned the 1936 season, when the team was State Champs.  This is from the Shawano Evening Leader, May 24, 1936:  “The outstanding feature of the Shawano performance in the State Meet Saturday was the finish of the half mile when Anderson and Janssen broke the tape hand and hand and contributed nine points and the only first that Shawano received in the meet.”  Anton Anderson was declared the winner, as he is the only one listed in WIAA publications taking first place.

The girls track team was organized in the early 70’s.  Two athletes competed at the state meet all four of their high school years, Barb Spitzberger and Deb Sazama.  Barb went on to compete at St. Norbert College in De Pere and Deb at the University of Wyoming-Laramie.
