🐳 Hillcrest Primary and LEADS Charter School had a visit from a life-sized gray whale!

It was an awesome experience as the students were able to learn about, see, and touch fossils and skulls of dinosaurs and whales. Students then had a chance to go inside the whale!

So much learning and excitement for our #ShawanoProud students! 🌟

🙌 Thank you Mr. Dave from Forest Whales for sharing your knowledge with us!

🔍🦉 Our #ShawanoProud 7th graders took a deep dive into science by dissecting owl pellets to investigate an owl’s diet!

Students carefully sorted and identified every bone they discovered, using observation skills and bone charts to piece together the story of what their owl had eaten. From skulls to femurs, this hands-on investigation brought learning to life in a truly memorable way.

Great work, scientists! 👏

Community Support Makes Environmental Learning Possible! 🌲🫶

Shawano Community Middle School is grateful for the generous support of the Shawano Chapter of Wisconsin DeerHunters Inc., who recently donated $500 to support the upcoming Trees for Tomorrow field trip in Eagle River, Wisconsin.

The donation was presented by Bob Weier of the Shawano Chapter and accepted by SCMS Life Science instructor Katie Flathom, along with seventh grade students Bryce Landon and Greyson Beyer.

This contribution will help approximately 100 seventh grade students attend the three-day environmental education experience at Trees for Tomorrow. During the trip, #ShawanoProud students will engage in hands-on learning focused on ecology, conservation, and environmental stewardship, gaining a deeper understanding of the natural world and their role in protecting it.

Support from community organizations like Wisconsin DeerHunters Inc. plays a vital role in making these meaningful, real-world learning experiences possible. We sincerely appreciate their commitment to education and conservation! ❤️

We love learning together across grade levels! 🌱

Our LEADS first graders had another amazing visit with the high school horticulture class! On our first trip, students planted seeds for milkweed and other plants to support our school pollinator garden. This time, we were excited to see those tiny seeds grow into sprouts!

With the help of the high school students, our #ShawanoProud first graders carefully transplanted their seedlings into larger pots so they can keep growing strong. 🌼

It’s been so special to watch our students learn about plants, teamwork, and caring for our environment, while building connections with older students in our school community! 💚

🌲 Mrs. Zoll's second grade class from LEADS Primary Charter recently took a trip to the Navarino Nature Center!
They would like to thank the Crawford Family Foundation for their program scholarship and the Wisconsin Deerhunters Inc. Gresham - Woodland Chapter for their bussing scholarship.
Their class and families would also like to say a special "thank you" the Navarino Nature Center for providing such an excellent program. They learned about animals of Wisconsin and their habitats, tracks, and features as well as how we can take care to not disrupt wild animal homes or habitats. 🦔🦝

✨ A Special Addition for Our #ShawanoProud Students! ✨
The Olga Brener “Buddy Bench” has officially arrived! This meaningful addition was made possible through the generosity of the Scherrer Cares Foundation.
The grant application included the Shawano School District logo and colors, creating a bench that proudly represents our district and school community. The Buddy Bench is located near the Brener cafeteria and the new District Community Room, where it will serve as a welcoming place for students to connect, build friendships, and ensure that no one feels alone.
The first students to enjoy the Buddy Bench were Ellie Bougie (3rd grade), Margaux Boldig (4th grade), and Hazel Lyons (5th grade), joined by Mr. Rick Parks from Scherrer Construction.
We are incredibly grateful for this partnership and the continued support of our Brener students and school community. Together, we are creating spaces where kindness and connection can grow. ❤️

🍿🎨 Collaboration in Action!

For their semester final, SCHS Food Science and Graphic Arts classes teamed up for a real-world project you could imagine seeing on grocery store shelves!

Food Science students developed their own unique flavored popcorn, then partnered with Graphic Arts students who brought the products to life through eye-catching packaging designs—complete with product images, nutrition facts, and shelf-ready branding.

This hands-on collaboration gave our #ShawanoProud students from both classes the opportunity to put their skills to work, experience cross-disciplinary teamwork, and see how science and design come together in the real world.

Learning never looked, or tasted, so good! 😋
